In the 1800’s, many hopefuls pioneered across South Dakota. At that time, Sioux Falls was considered to be the “gateway” commencing a 70 Day walk to the Black Hills. While most cattle came up from the well known trails out of the southern United States, there was a small herd waiting in Sioux Falls. Sold to a rancher by proxy, these cattle were to be delivered to the Black Hills by late summer. The cowpunchers hired to drive this herd west were all women.
